Echo
Echo installed at San Francisco's Yerba Buena Center for the Arts
Echo was inspired by the myth of a cursed mountain nymph who could only repeat what was said to her. Subsequently, her unrequited love for Narcissus caused her to decay physically until all that was left was her voice.
Echo records the sounds in the gallery and plays them back after a slight delay. The natural acoustic properties of the room selectively amplify certain frequencies, so those tones resound the longest.
